This was the first day of the school year and my mother had gone to work early, feeling her day would be full of work to do. My father had gone to bed early the night before and so did I, just as my mother had promised me, I had long to sleep as well as to work.I was already sixteen years old when I entered a school where all the pupils were nineteen or twenty-one years old. My mother was anxious about the first few days of school, and after telling me she was sorry to think that my father was no longer in the country he begged me to give it up as a waste of time. He told me that it was a time when he was too old for school and that he would have liked to be with his children; but he did not know whether they would have managed properly. He had only just returned from a visit to his father in England a few months previously and he was almost certain to be back before the end of the year.My father would have wanted me to go to school, he told me how hard it was to work as a governess and how much it would be worth to be able to leave my old life behind him. If I had been better trained as a governess and made better use of my talents, he said, I should have become a professional.'When you were a child,' he went on, 'you had many wonderful teachers who taught you things about life and living, but now your life has to be taken from you because you are a ward of the state. Youhave only a month to get on in your studies and that is a very short time in which to make all the necessary preparations. You must take care of yourself and be wise. You will want to know how to live when you are still a boy.'When you are twenty -one, you don't matter, when you are twenty-eight, thirty, and forty; a year is a very short time. My advice to you is that you should try to make the most of the time left by giving yourself every chance of learning something about life and the best means of doing this is through studying well the subjects you study at school and by giving yourself the best possible start in your first year of college.'First year is the period when you need to be reading for reading's sake, which is what all important literature is, and which you should do without any regard for style or form, since you will be trying to understand the nature of things in a spirit of curiosity. Be good and practical and wise and to look at things without losing sight of the basic truths that underlie all the others. The first three chapters of this book are devoted to teaching you how to read wisely. It is a good place to start for your study of the world's literature.
